It is that time of the year. The days get shorter, the temperature drops, the leaves fall and we say our goodbyes to the northern midnight sun. The autumn has finally come, and we could not be happier!

But this can only mean one thing for us Swedish theatre lovers, a fresh new theatre season!

This season brings both revivals of old favorites and new shows and I have complied a list of upcoming shows I'm looking forward to see!

Kristina From Duvemåla

ABBA's Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus musical based on Vilhelm Moberg's Emigrant Epic. The show, which was seen by over one million people, premiered in Malmö in 1995 and then played at the newly built Opera House and Circus Theatre in Stockholm. In autumn it returns to the 20th anniversary of Gothenburg Opera with the Finnish Maria Ylipää in the lead (Wicked, Miss Saigon, Evita), Robert Noack, Birthe Wingren and Oskar Nilsson.

The musical, which is all the opposites to Björn and Benny's Broadway and West End hit "Mamma Mia" is the story of the main character Kristina (originally played by Helen Sjöholm) and her husband Karl-Oskar (originally played by Peter Jöback), which together with friends, family, and 1.3 million other Swedes emigrated to America during the 1800s.

Livet är en schlager

LIVET ÄR EN SCHLAGER (English title: Once In A Lifetime) is based on the beloved Swedish movie from 2000. It is written and produced by the award-winning writer and comedian, Jonas Gardell.

The musical has a brand new script and songs all written by Gardell.

It follows the schlager music (hit songs frequently represented at Eurovision Song Contest) obsessed Mona Berglund who steals and submits her employer's, a cerebral palsy sufferer's, self composed song. A song, which qualifies for the finals and leads Mona to stardom.

The world premiere in Stockholm took place on Saturday 11 September starring the star duo Peter Jöback and Helen Sjöholm whom are once again reunited on the theatre stage, 19 years after their roles in "Kristina Från Duvemåla".

Evita

Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's musical about the wife of former Argentine dicator and representative of Peronism returns to Sweden in September. The leading role is played by the Swedish singer and Eurovision Song Contest winner, Charlotte Perrelli.

The Göta Lejon theatre promises a spectacular production with real Broadway spirit.
