UNION AVENUE OPERA PRESENTS LAKMÉ, A MISSOURI PREMIERE

Lakmé makes its Missouri debut at Union Avenue Opera August 21, with additional performances August 22, 28 and 29 at 8PM. The final and most popular opera of famed French composer Léo Delibes, Lakmé, will have its first professional performance in Missouri and the first in the Midwest since a 1983 production at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, quickly reminding audiences of its enchanting power.

Against the exotic background of colonial India, Lakmé tells the story of two lovers who are worlds apart. The beautiful Lakmé, daughter of the Hindu high priest, is found at the river by Gérald, a British officer. A myriad of forces conspire to keep them apart: Lakmé's father, the laws of her people, Gérald's fiancée, and his duty to his country. Will their love triumph despite all obstacles? Patricia Johnson returns to UAO as the striking Lakmé (Micaëla 2008 Carmen), and Roderick George returns as the gallant Gérald (2007 Die Zauberflöte, 2006 La bohème). In a rare twist, UAO's Artist Director and Conductor Scott Schoonover hands over the baton to returning guest conductor Kostis Protopapas (2008 Otello) and takes to action as the stage director. Featuring remarkable music, including the famous "Flower Duet", Lakmé's "Bell Song," and magnificent choruses, Lakmé brings the splendor of colonial India to the UAO stage! Tickets are available now for $30-$52 and are going fast! Performances will be at 8 p.m. at Union Avenue Opera, 733 Union Boulevard, 63108. Union Avenue Opera was founded in 1994 from one man's vision for affordable, professional opera in St. Louis. Scott Schoonover set about building an opera company dedicated to offering a venue for gifted, emerging singers, musicians, directors and technicians, to be enjoyed by the breadth and diversity of the St. Louis region. UAO's growing success allowed for a 2006 capital campaign that resulted in a newly expanded stage and orchestra pit. Now in its 15th season, UAO continues to pursue its mission with excellence and integrity, presenting affordable operas in original languages. Union Avenue Opera is proud to be an integral part of the St. Louis arts community. For more information about UAO and its programs, visit www.unionavenueopera.org.
