The Celtic Tenors have established themselves as one of the most successful crossover artists to emerge from Ireland. In 2000, following an impromptu audition at EMI in London, the Celtic Tenors were signed on the spot to an international record deal, a highly unusual event that was the talk of the music industry. Merging Irish repertoire, well-known classical arias and contemporary favorites, the Tenors deliver a fun-filled evening of popular music from "O Sole Mio" and "Nessun Dorma" to "Danny Boy," and "Finnegan's Wake."
Though the personnel of the band has changed over the years, The Celtic Tenors have found great success through album sales exceeding one million sold and gaining worldwide recognition with their debut album going to Number 1 in Ireland and Germany and Number 2 in the UK. The album went on to achieve double platinum status in their homeland, and won them the "Echo Award" for Best Classical Crossover Act in Germany. The Celtic Tenors have also topped the charts in the U.S. and Canada.
While The Celtic Tenors have been influenced by the musical traditions from each of their native areas of Ireland, Daryl Simpson, James Nelson and Matthew Gilsenan, combined with talented young Musical Director Colm Henry, show great flexibility in melding their voices to suit the appropriate classical, folk, Irish and pop genres. Their distinctive use of three-part harmonies, and mission to "re-invent the whole tenor idiom" by pioneering a new style of cool with their eclectic mix of classical, folk, Irish and pop, set them apart from many of today's tenor trios. The Celtic Tenors have performed for world leaders, headlined Irish and Celtic Festivals in Europe and the U.S., appeared in concert with such names as Dionne Warwick, and The Chieftains, and performed with various orchestras including the BBC Concert Orchestra, The National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra.
