The Sheldon presents "French Impressions" featuring Mark Sparks, flute, and Yolanda Kondonassis, harp, Wednesday, February 9, 2011 at 8 p.m. in the perfect acoustics of the Sheldon Concert Hall. Inspired by Monet's Water Lilies, a painting from the collection of the St. Louis Art Museum, symphony principal flutist Mark Sparks and internationally recognized harpist Yolanda Kondonassis perform beautiful French music by Saint-Saëns, Debussy, and Lili Boulanger. Join us at 7:10 for a pre-concert talk with pianist Peter Henderson.

Appointed Principal Flute of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra in 2000, Mark Sparks has firmly established himself as a leading American orchestral flutist and teacher. He has performed in both solo and ensemble roles in the United States , Europe, South America and Asia with numerous orchestras, including guest appearances with the New York Philharmonic, Cincinnati Symphony and Detroit Symphony Orchestra. In addition, Sparks was Associate Principal Flute with the Baltimore Symphony under David Zinman, and Principal Flute of the San Antonio Symphony, Memphis Symphony and Canton Symphony.

 

Yolanda Kondonassis is celebrated as one of the world's premiere solo harpists and is widely regarded as today's most recorded classical harpist. Since making her debut at age 18 with the New York Philharmonic, Kondonasis has appeared as soloist with numerous major orchestras in the United States and abroad such as the Cleveland Orchestra, the English Chamber Orchestra and the Hong Kong Philharmonic. Other solo appearances include performances at Lincoln Center , the 92nd Street Y and Taiwan 's National Concert Hall. With over 100,000 albums sold worldwide, Kondonassis received a 2010 Grammy nomination for best chamber music performance for her 2008 Telarc recording Air. Her list of national and international honors includes top prizes in the Affiliate Artists National Auditions in New York and the Maria Korchinska International Harp Competition in Great Britain.
