STAGES St. Louis will open its 28th season with a musical gem rarely seen in St. Louis, They're Playing Our Song May 30th through June 29th at the Robert G. Reim Theatre in Kirkwood. Romance, laughter, and great music come together in a sweet and sophisticated musical romp that will have you singing along from curtain up to curtain down!
They're Playing Our Song opened on February 11, 1979 at the Imperial Theatre on Broadway, where it enjoyed 1,082 performances. The original run starred both Emmy Award-winning actress Lucie Arnaz and stand-up comedian Robert Klein. Inspired by one of the most prolific American song writing teams of the 20th Century, Marvin Hamlisch and Carole Bayer Sager, They're Playing Our Song combines a jazzy score with a laugh-a-minute book by America's leading funny man, Tony Award Winner Neil Simon. The fresh array of appealing pop tunes along with witty writing creates a charming and unique variation on the traditional book musical. With just two central characters, each having a three-person "Greek Chorus" acting as their inner voices, this story gives the impression of an intimate show in a large package.
The song-filled love story recounts the unlikely partnership of Vernon, a neurotic, witty composer and Sonia, a wacky, free-spirited lyricist to write the next great love song. A rocky and hilarious start leaves them struggling to find their creative harmony - and romance was definitely not what they were expecting! But a series of unlikely events lead to a match made in musical comedy heaven.
Broadway Actor Seth Rettberg stars, in his STAGES debut, as Vernon Gersch. Rettberg has appeared on Broadway in Avenue Q as well as in regional productions of Fiddler on the Roof, Disney's Beauty and the Beast, and Cabaret. TV credits include "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon."
