Sheldon Concert Hall Welcomes SHAWN COLVIN on 10/1

The Sheldon presents multiple Grammy Award-winner Shawn Colvin with special guest Lauren Shera, Friday, October 1, 2010 at 8 p.m. in the perfect acoustics of the Sheldon Concert Hall.

In the nineteen years since the release of her debut album, Shawn Colvin has won three Grammy Awards, released eight albums, maintained a non-stop national and international touring schedule, appeared on countless television and radio programs, had her songs featured in major motion pictures, and created a remarkable library of work. Combined sales of her albums total more than 2.5 million copies in the United States , and Colvin consistently continues to perform nationally. Over the years, she has shared the stage and toured with legendary artists such as Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Hornsby, Emmylou Harris, and Lyle Lovett. She has toured internationally throughout her career, returning to places such as the UK and Europe, Asia, Australia , and New Zealand .

A small-town childhood in the university town of Carbondale , IL, drew her to the guitar by the age of 10. She made her first public appearance on campus at the University of Illinois at age 15. By the late 1970s, Colvin was singing in a Western Swing band in Austin , TX -the city she now calls home. After moving to New York in the '80s, she began honing her skill as a songwriter, and was soon signed to Columbia Records where her first album, Steady On, won a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Recording.

Colvin continued to win fans and critics with her subsequent releases. In 1996, she released A Few Small Repairs, which would prove to be her breakthrough. The murder-ballad "Sunny Came Home" gave Colvin a Top 10 hit and two of Grammy's biggest honors: Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Her Nonesuch debut These Four Walls (2006) was lauded by People Magazine as "the most self-assured album of her career" and "one for the ages" by the Washington Post. Colvin's newest release, Shawn Colvin Live (2009), was recorded in 2008 during a special three-night solo engagement at San Francisco 's famous jazz club, Yoshi's, and was recently nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album.

Opening for Colvin is Lauren Shera. With original songs and lyrics, Shera has steadily created her own unique path in the world of Contemporary Folk. To date she has appeared on stage supporting such acts as Jason Mraz, Billy Bragg, Todd Snider, Joan Osborne, Nanci Griffith, Leo Kottke, Ray LaMontagne and Phil Lesh. Additionally, Shera has appeared at festivals such as the High Sierra Music Festival, Sausalito Music & Arts Festival, Monterey Music Summit and South By Southwest. In 2006, she was invited to perform at the Bob Dylan tribute concert at New York City 's Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center , to benefit the Music For Youth Foundation, where she was accompanied on stage by renowned guitarist Warren Haynes.
