The Sheldon presents Victor Goines: "The Two Sides of Sonny," Saturday, November 13, 2010 at 8 p.m. in theperfect acoustics of the Sheldon Concert Hall. Widely recognized as one of the most engaging and versatile performers, composers, collaborators and educators in music today, Goines pays tribute to two saxophone greats - Sonny Stitt and Sonny Rollins.

Goines's career includes performances throughout the world, earning him acclaim from audiences, critics, students and colleagues. A native of New Orleans, Goines began playing clarinet at the age of eight, and continued his studies with Carl Blouin, Sr., who introduced him to the saxophone at St. Augustine High School. In 1980, he entered Loyola University in New Orleans where he studied clarinet and saxophone, receiving a Bachelor of Music Education Degree in 1984. As Goines's interest in jazz increased, he contacted Ellis Marsalis in 1983 to take private lessons and eight months later, Marsalis selected Goines to play saxophone as a member of his quartet.

A member of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra since 1993, Goines also has an active solo career, performing and recording with The Victor Goines Quartet, with recordings including New Adventures, To Those We Love So Dearly, Joe's Blues and Genesis. In addition to his solo releases, he has performed and collaborated with artists such as the Wynton Marsalis Septet, Marcus Roberts and the Academy of Ascension, Terence Blanchard, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Diana Krall, Dianne Reeves, Marcia Ball, Bo Didley Freddie Hubbard, James Moody and a host of other renowned musicians and ensembles.

Deeply committed to the field of jazz education, Goines currently holds the position of Northwestern University Artistic Director forthe Jazz Studies program and Education Consultant for Jazz at Lincoln Center, and has conducted master classes, clinics, workshops, lectures and lessons for numerous universities, organizations and performing arts centers while touring with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. His education posts have included Director of Jazz Studies for The Juilliard School, Professor of Jazz Saxophone and Woodwinds and Jazz Studies at Florida A&M University, Adjunct Professor at Xavier University, and a member of the faculties of Loyola University and the University of New Orleans.
