STAGE TUBE: The Muny Announces 2013 Season - SHREK, SPAMALOT, MARY POPPINS & More!

The Muny's Assistant Director of Marketing Larry Pry appeared on "Today In St. Louis" this morning, October 27, to announce the theater's 2013 season.

Celebrating 95 spectacular summers in Forest Park, The Muny announces its 2013 summer season, a mix of contemporary musicals and timeless classics, including four Muny premieres. The seven shows are: Les Misérables, The Muny’s Production of Disney and Cameron Macintosh’s Mary Poppins, Nunsense–Muny Style!, The Muny’s Production of Dreamworks Theatricals Shrek–The Musical, South Pacific, Monty Python’s Spamalot and West Side Story.

Last seen at The Muny in 2007, Les Misérables has been one of the most popular musicals since it opened in London in 1985, with its glorious scenery, grand theatrics and epic Victor Hugo story.

Making its Muny premiere, The Muny Production of Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins isone of the most eagerly anticipated productions of the season. Winner of 44 major theatre awards from around the globe, Mary Poppins has captivated audiences for generations.

The Muny is “blessed” to usher in the debut of the 30th anniversary all-Muny edition of the international phenomenon, Nunsense–Muny Style! Making its Muny debut, this divine comedy follows the Little Sisters of Hoboken, members of a spirited and inspired convent, in their effort to raise money to bury members of their order – victims of an unfortunate vichyssoise “incident.” Nunsense has enjoyed 5,000 productions worldwide and has been translated into 21 languages.

The Muny’s Production of Dreamworks Theatricals Shrek–The Musical will make its Muny premiere. Once upon a time there was a swamp dwelling ogre who went on an adventure with his best friend, a very talkative donkey. Along the way, he fought a fearsome dragon, rescued a feisty princess, and learned that real friendship and true love aren’t only found in fairytales. Shrek–The Musical was nominated for eight Tony Awards and features a terrific score of 19 all-new songs.

Last seen at The Muny in 2003, South Pacific returns to The Muny for its 10th production. As haunting and evocative as Bali Hai itself, South Pacific remains Rodgers and Hammerstein’s most eloquent musical drama, and their most deeply felt musical romance. The masterful and lyrical love story between Army nurse Nellie Forbush and the mysterious French planter, Emile de Becque won the 1949 Pulitzer Prize for drama and a total of 10 Tony Awards.

Monty Python’s Spamalot makes its Muny premiere. Lovingly ripped off from the classic film comedy,“Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” Spamalot is a new musical with a book by Eric Idle and score by John DuPrez. It tells the legendary tale of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, and featuring a bevy of beautiful showgirls, not to mention cows, killer rabbits and French people. Nominated for 12 Tony Awards, Spamalot is the winner of the 2004 Tony for Best Musical.

Last seen at The Muny in 2005, West Side Story returns to The Muny for its 8th production. More than50 years ago, West Side Story exploded the boundaries of what a musical could be, and today thegreatest love story of all time remains as powerful and timely as ever. The Sharks and the Jets, Tonyand Maria, the romance and the rumbles all combine to retell the timeless Romeo and Juliet story in a purely American way. The historic collaboration of Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim has created an enduring musical tragedy as sharp as a switchblade knife and as soft as new love.
