New Line Theatre, "the Bad Boy of Musical Theatre," continues its nineteenth season of provocative, adult, alternative musical theatre with the St. Louis premiere of Andrew Lippa's rowdy, raunchy, jazz musical THE WILD PARTY, running April 22-May 15, 2010.
And for the tenth production in a row, the New Liners are blogging about the process of creating this show. This time, five actors and the director have blogs up and running, and they can all be accessed at http://www.newlinetheatre.com/blogs.html.
New Line is tapping into new technologies and cultural trends aggressively, with our presence on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, MySpace, and Wikipedia, our viral videos, blogs, and so much more. New Line is working at extending the theatre experience beyond the physical theatre, engaging our audiences in between shows, creating a real community around our work.
Starting in 2007, the New Liners began chronicling the process of making musicals The New Line Way, through online journals called blogs (a contraction of the phrase "web logs"). Actors, interns, designers, our choreographer, our stage manager, and our artistic director write about the joys and difficulties of creating musical theatre, from casting through the first read-through, tech week, opening night, the reviews, the audience response, and closing the show.
The blogs serve two purposes. First, for our audiences who don't work in the theatre, these blogs provide a rare glimpse inside the incredibly complex process of making musical theatre, giving readers new insight into the art and craft that goes into the finished show they enjoy on our stage. Also, the blogs create a sense of community among the cast, design team, and staff, reminding us that we're not just putting on a show, but more than that, making exciting art that touches and engages tens of thousands of people.
THE WILD PARTY runs April 22-May 15, 2010, at the Washington University South Campus Theatre (formerly CBC High School), 6501 Clayton Road, just east of Big Bend. Tickets are available now through Metrotix, 314-534-1111 or www.Metrotix.com. More info about the show is available online at http://www.newlinetheatre.com/wildpartypage.html
