COCA 2014 Summer Arts Camps

COCA Summer Arts Camps for ages 3 to 18 feature a multitude of options for exploring theatre, dance, music, visual arts, culinary arts and more. Multidisciplinary themed camps allow kids and teens the opportunity to combine activities in several areas. Camps are available in one-week sessions, with morning, afternoon and full-day options. Before and After Care available; additional fees apply. COCA Gallery Exhibition: Breathe - Maria Ojascastro and Rudy Zapf

In this collaborative mixed-media exhibition, Maria Ojascastro and Rudy Zapf exhibit recent works layering prints, paint, text and found objects as a meditation on resilience. The exhibition is free and open to the public through Sunday, September 28, in the Millstone Gallery at COCA, 524 Trinity Avenue, St. Louis, MO. Art & Wellness Retreat

This workshop, which highlights the healing and meditative power of art creation, is comprised of hands- on projects led by artists Maria Ojascastro and Rudy Zapf. In the morning, participants will work with Maria Ojascastro to manipulate pre-printed images and text into a vehicle for personal expression to create a unique mixed-media work of art. In the afternoon, participants will work with Rudy Zapf to create mixed-media "story boxes" that house found and created objects, words and art materials to tell a story. This workshop is appropriate for students with varied art backgrounds. This workshop is presented in conjunction with Breathe, an exhibition of Ojascastro's and Zapf's work in the Millstone Gallery at COCA opening June 13, 2014, that layers prints, paint, text and found objects as a meditation on resilience. Taste of COCA: Ragtime Rehearsal

Taste of COCA events are "bite-sized" opportunities for adults to sample the arts at COCA. Each TOC event includes a creative arts experience, cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. Join Director Grace Austin, Vocal Director Phil Woodmore and the cast of Ragtime for a backstage preview of the highly-anticipated production celebrating the 10th anniversary of the COCA Summer Musical. COCA Presents 2013-2014: Ragtime - COCA Summer Musical

COCA Theatre Company (CTC) presents Ragtime, with book by Terrence McNally, music by Stephen Flaherty, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and based on the novel by E.L. Doctorow. The COCA Summer Musical celebrates its 10th anniversary with this powerful portrait of life in turn-of-the-century America. Ragtime draws upon the era's rich and varied music to tell the story of three extraordinary families struggling to make sense of life in America. The cast includes students chosen by area-wide audition as well as CTC alumni from the last 10 years of COCA Summer Musicals. This CTC production is directed by Grace Austin, with musical direction by Adaron Jackson and choreography by Lee Nolting and Christopher Page. Recommended for teens and adults. COCAedu 2014 Summer Institute for Arts Integration

The COCAedu 2014 Summer Institute for Arts Integration will provide educators with strategies on how to use the arts to connect to curricular areas, increase student engagement, deepen student comprehension and identify alternative assessment opportunities. Workshops are designed to let participants explore quality arts integration, and give them the tools and strategies to feel confident using the arts across a variety of content areas. In addition, all workshops will explore ways to use the arts in science and math, in support of the national STEAM movement. The institute features workshops by Sean and Melanie Layne, and Randy Barron, arts integration experts and coaches with The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The institute is Monday, July 28 - Wednesday, July 30, at the Regional Arts Commission, 6128 Delmar Boulevard, St. Louis, MO. COCA Student Company Auditions: Allegro

COCA's student vocal ensemble has a repertoire that incorporates musical theatre, pop and seasonal arrangements. Allegro performs both at COCA and throughout the St. Louis community. Interested students ages 11 to 18 should prepare a complete song and bring sheet music, a resume and a headshot/photo. An accompanist will be provided. Students selected must pay a $450 participation fee, enroll in a required number of classes and attend weekly rehearsals on Saturday afternoons. Financial aid is available for those who qualify. COCA Theatre Company (CTC) Auditions: The Yellow Boat

Interested students ages 11 to 18 should prepare a one-minute monologue and bring a resume and a headshot/photo. Students cast must pay a $195 participation fee and attend rehearsals on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons beginning August 25, 2014. Financial aid is available for those who qualify. Written by David Saar, The Yellow Boat is based on the true story of his son, Benjamin, who was born with congenital hemophilia and died at the age of 8 from AIDS-related complications. A uniquely gifted visual artist, Benjamin's buoyant imagination transformed his illness into a blaze of colors and shapes in his paintings. The Yellow Boat is directed by Shawna Flanigan. Performances are October 11-13, 2014, in COCA's Black Box Theatre. COCA Student Dance Company Auditions:
Ballet Eclectica, COCAdance and The COCA Hip-Hop Crew

COCA holds annual auditions for ages 10 to 18 for its three student dance companies. Ballet Eclectica's repertoire incorporates elements of classical and contemporary ballet. COCAdance's repertoire incorporates elements of modern and various jazz styles. The COCA Hip-Hop Crew's repertoire features cutting-edge hip-hop choreography by founder Anthony "Redd" Williams. All three companies provide members with performance opportunities both at COCA and throughout the St. Louis community. Advance registration for all student dance company auditions is required. Students auditioning for more than one company (two maximum) must register for and attend both auditions. Students selected must pay company dues, enroll in a required number of classes and attend company rehearsals. Financial aid is available for those who qualify. A parent/dancer informational meeting and mock audition is Monday, August 11, from 5:00-8:30pm. Auditions for ages 10 to 13 are Thursday, August 14, from 5:00-7:00pm and Sunday, August 17, from 12:00-2:00pm. Asian Market Tour of St. Louis

Join Chef Clara Moore, author of Shop Like a Chef, on this educating and delicious tour of St. Louis Asian markets. Participants will travel to a variety of small stores and explore the shelves and freezers while learning about new ingredients and equipment. Chef Clara will explain how to shop for seafood and other diverse ingredients while helping participants understand how to use them in simple recipes. The tour ends with lunch at Chef Clara's favorite Korean restaurant. The tour begins and ends at COCA, with transportation provided by COCA. For ages 21 and up.
