As his symphonic output unfolded, Beethoven's orchestration achieved ever greater plenitude, so that each of the earlier symphonies became a necessary step towards the Ninth, which culminates with the human voice. The inclusion of a choral movement was a symphonic revolution and Beethoven chose the words of the Ode to Joy, which convey Friederich Schiller's idealistic vision of brotherhood among peoples, a veritable hymn to freedom.
