The Requiem is a work bathed in mystery. Its luminous lyricism has the power to entrance us while the counterpoint and fugues impress on us the inevitability of death. Its exquisite beauty has made it an all-time classic.
It was commissioned by an anonymous aristocrat, who hoped to pass it off as his own work. But the already ailing Mozart became obsessed with it and saw it as his own requiem.
He failed to complete it and it was finished by his pupil F. X. Süssmayr on the basis of outlines and instructions provided by the dying composer.
