The overture to an oratorio by Schumann inspired by Goethe's Faust, and an Impressionist score by Falla influenced by his friend Rusiñol's landscape paintings, make up the first part of this concert. The climax comes in the second part with Brahms' great First Symphony, a work that was a long time in the making, which shows respect for the composer's forerunners – Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven – and an acute awareness of the weight of history.
