Coppélius wants to give Franz's soul to his mechanical doll, Coppélia. But Swalhilda, Franz's fiancée, impersonates Coppélia to save him. This amusing yet profound tale questions the scientific values that challenge faith and seek to create life on the basis of reason. It also leads us to mistrust those we love.
The inspiration for Léo Delibes' ballet came from one of E.T.A. Hoffmann's tales of fantasy. Yet both the characters and the traditional dances endow it with a marked realism.
Julio Bocca directs the Sodre National Ballet from Uruguay in this highly theatrical version. The colourful costumes reinforce the vigour and elegance of the dancing and acting.
