Talking about the Leipzig Ballet, one of the few great ballet companies in Germany with a worldwide reputation, still refers to Uwe Scholz, who was its director and choreographer from 1991 until his death in 2004.
Scholz’s works brought him diverse awards, including the Omagio Award for Dance, the Theatre Medal from the Bavarian Government in the Dance category for “The Great Mass” and the German Dance Medal.
Following his death, Mario Schröder, the company’s lead dancer until 1999, was appointed the new director of the Leipzig Ballet in 2010. Since then, he has been committed to showing the company’s work to a worldwide audience.
The music for “The Great Mass” by Mozart and some other compositions of sacred music, Gregorian chants and contemporary music sequences by György Kurtág, Thomas Jahn and Arvo Pärt, in addition to the reading of poems by Paul Celan are brought together in “The Great Mass”.
