Maxim de Winter is having some hard days after losing his wife Rebecca in an accident. Then in the middle of traveling to Monte Carlo, he meets and falls in love with I. They get married and make plans to live together at the Manderley, Maxims mansion.



Manderley was place of beauty and peculiarness. As if Rebecca was still breathing, everything in the place is still deeply tainted with her. The housekeeper Mrs.Danvers reveals wariness with a constant absence of expression, and the new lady of the house cant help but feel suffocated.



To make a change of scene, she decides to open a masquerade, and prepares a wonderful dress with the help of Mrs.Danvers. On the day of the party, she finds out that it is the same dress as Rebeccas. She falls into a deep sense of shame after seeing Maxims rage. Mrs.Danvers tells her that no one can take the place of Rebecca, and recommends suicide.
