Different DITTO is a contemporary music concert that Ensemble DITTO has been proudly presenting since 2012. Different DITTO has dealt with challenging repertoire such as Steve Reich, Olivier Messiaen, Huang Ruo, John Adams, George Crumb, Henri Dutilleux but the audience has shown abnormal enthusiasm during and before and after the concerts. Surprisingly, among other concerts in the festival this concert has become one of the concerts with the highest concentrativeness. The title of the concert for 2015 is ‘Fallen Angels’ and as Schubert’s masterpiece ‘Death and the Maiden’ endlessly gave inspiration to many artists since its birth, DITTO will head toward Schubert who always swayed at the boundaries of life and death.

The performance will begin with a cello duo by John Zorn, a spotlighted composer in the U.S. John Zorn has covered diverse genres such as jazz, rock, hardcore, classical music, and impromptu playing and has been placing his name on the credit list of many albums currently released in the U.S. The cello duo will be performed by DITTO’s cellist Michael Nicolas and this season’s guest member Jay Campbell. Last year, Jay Campbell participated in Richard Yongjae O’Neill’s 10th anniversary Korea debut concert tour and with this, he came to join as a guest member for DITTO season 9. Along with the new DITTO member pianist Steven Lin, Jay Campbell is also a rising star in the U.S. Nicolas and Campbell recently have been performing John Zorn’s works in New York.

The following work by George Crumb, ‘Black Angels’ was inspired by the Vietnamese War. Sounds that are likely to be heard from a military warehouse such as loud shouts, chanting, whistling, crystal glasses hitting each other are put together with a string quartet to form a piece. The work consists of 13 scenes and Crumb portraits a soul wandering this dark scene. For this work, Richard Yongjae O’Neill is to place a special sculpture on stage.

The last piece, Schubert’s ‘Death and the Maiden’, is one of the most loved string quartet repertoires of all times. It reflects the vanity of life and the emotional state of Schubert surrounded by dark tragedies. Schubert called this piece ‘whispers of fate’ and it meant the seduction and comfort of death as eternal sleep. In particular, the song ‘Death and the Maiden (D. 531, a lied made by Matthias Claudius’s poem)’ that is about a conversation between the girl resisting against death and the god of death luring her to death with sweet words is cited in the 2nd movement.
