This lesser know opera (or “scène lyrique”) by Impressionist composer Claude Debussy was written during his time at the Paris Conservatory in 1884. For this work Debussy won the prestigious Prix-de-Rome award for composition that helped launch his international career. Whilst perhaps sounding a bit closer to his contemporary Jules Massenet, this opera is a charming example of the young Debussy’s rather prodigious talent. The opera follows the familiar biblical story of “The Prodigal Son” and features Tenor, Grant Knox as Azaël. the Prodigal Son, Soprano, Candace Dickinson as Lia, his mother and Baritone Christian Elser as Siméon, his father. The production will be sung in French with projected english supertitles. It is stage directed by Jenna Tamisiea.
