Satan in High Heels is a stage adaptation of the 1962 sexploitation masterpiece that put the "sin" in cinema. The story follows Stacey Kane, a cunning and ambitious striptease dancer in a cheap carnival, as she tricks her heroin-addicted husband Rudy out of his money, leaving him (clothed only in a corset and raincoat) to catch a plane to New York. Stacy lands a gig as a nightclub singer and quickly engages in a series of torrid affairs with the nightclub's manager, a world-weary lesbian named Pepe; the nightclub's owner, shady businessman Arnold Kenyon; and his naive son, Larry. Stacy plays all sides against the other but soon faces her past when Rudy, her husband, comes to town looking for revenge.
Robbie Robertson is a playwright and screenwriter and a graduate of both the University of South Carolina and UCLA's professional program in screenwriting. Robertson's first play, MINA TONIGHT!, was published by Samuel French Inc. and has been consistently produced in regional theatres across the nation. He created the musical comedy The Twitty Triplets and brought 60s TV to life by directing a staged version of Gilligan's Island at Trustus Theatre. Robertson's screenplays have placed in several national contests, including his latest comedy, Sweet Child of Mine being named one of the top 12 comedy scripts in the 2010 Austin Film Festival's Screenwriting Competition. He is currently developing several independent television and film projects in addition to his work in advertising and public relations.
"I believe that theatre should provide an open forum for creative experimentation and offer an opportunity for true collaboration," said Robertson. "Over the years, I've been very fortunate to find venues and people that have allowed me to stage new works, which is one of the most difficult things to do in today's market driven climate." Trustus is enthusiastic to host the first reading of Robertson's Satan in High Heels.
The reading is directed by Trustus Alumni Tim Gardner and stars future Trustus Executive Director Larry Hembree as "Pepe," Vicky Saye Henderson as "Stacy Kane," Kim Harne as "Felice," Robbie Butt as "Paul," Emerson Smith as "Larry," Chad Forrister as "Louie," Stanford Gardner as "Rudy" and David Arthur as the "Barker". Charleston's PURE Theater's co-founders Sharon Graci and Rodney Rogers join the cast as well.
Trustus Theatre is located at 520 Lady Street, behind the Gervais St. Publix. Parking is available on Lady St. and on Pulaski St. The Main Stage entrance is located on the Publix side of the building.
