The Abbeville Opera House presents Becky's New Car by Steven Dietz, April 12, 13, 19, 20, 26 and 27.
Spring is in there air and things are winding down on the Winter Season at the Abbeville Opera House with our final show of the season opening this weekend: BECKY'S NEW CAR. Director Michael Genevie describes the brand-new comedy as "a very funny and touching trip about 'the life not taken' by playwright Steven Dietz. It's a great play to bring to a close our 104th Winter Theatre Season at the Opera House.
Becky Foster, played by Opera House veteran actress Kay Gross who now lives in Boston and has been "commuting" to Abbeville (and racking up a lot of frequent flyer miles) for rehearsals, is a likable character who is married and working at a car dealership. When one night, by chance, Becky is offered an opportunity to step into another life -- she takes it. Becky's New Car is about life, love, marriage and the detours we make on the way to happiness.
"We are so fortunate to have Kay Gross come back to the Opera House for this wonderful new play. She's flying back and forth from Boston where she and her husband moved last year, just to do this show for us and she's doing an absolutely incredible job with this wonderful new material," says Genevie.
Also starring in the high speed play about Becky's life is a talented and skilled ensemble of Opera House veteran actors that Genevie is very proud of - featuring David Eller as Becky's husband, Joe Foster, a roofer; Tom Newman as Walter Flood, a very wealthy businessman; Mark Meyers as Steve, Becky's co-worker at the Car Dealership; Amy Becker as Ginger, a neighbor of Walter's; and Amber Swann as Kensington Floor, Walter's daughter. Rounding out the cast is a talented Opera House newcomer, Harrison Light who plays Becky's son Chris, a psychology student.
In Becky's New Car, we follow the high-speed life of Becky Foster-caught in middle age, middle management and in a middling marriage-with no prospects for change on the horizon. Then one night a socially inept and grief-struck millionaire stumbles into the car dealership where Becky works. Becky is offered nothing short of a new life...and the audience is offered a chance to ride shotgun in a way that most plays wouldn't dare. This is what attracted Genevie to the show initially. Becky's New Car is a thoroughly original comedy with serious overtones, a devious and delightful romp down the road not taken. You don't want to miss it! Call (864) 366-2157 for tickets!
