Shine is an original musical fable created by Terrance Henderson and Columbia's IndigoSoul. The story follows a restless youth on his journey to find his own "light." On this quest, he encounters three muses who help him discover his true voice and how he can bring his own light into the world. Using new and traditional songs, poetry, dance, storytelling and shadow play, Shine illustrates the importance of focus, perspective, creativity and learning to look to your own history, culture and family traditions for inspiration. Taking audiences on a journey through soulful music with songs ranging from traditional African folksong to Blues, Standards and Hip-Hop. Shine is a new kind of coming of age story: one that lights a fire on the inside to burn brightly in the world.
Described as an "explosion of creativity and self," the production employs illusionary staging using non-traditional light sources like glowing orbs, lasers and shadow-play and dance styles from traditional West African, Jazz, and Contemporary all blending with Henderson's signature choreography and movement aesthetic
"This is truly a labor of love," says IndigoSoul's Artistc Director Terrance Henderson. "The entire cast has reached deep inside to help carve out this allegory of growing up, spreading your wings and finding your light."
IndigoSoul is a soul music trio featuring the combined talents of locally-based performing artists Katrina Blanding, Terrance Henderson, and Kendrick Marion. Dedicated to the creation of new works, it is a collective of and for our community using their soulful sounds not only as inspiration but also to shine more light on underrepresented voices and stories. "IndigoSoul is the heartbeat of Shine," says Henderson, "It's the rhythm of healing, of love and light."
The show also features Asten Stewart, an Irmo High School graduate and a student at The American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York.
