The popular NiA Company, known for bringing fresh, challenging, and engaging scripts to life on Columbia stages, is currently producing a hilarious comedy penned by nationally acclaimed playwright Rajiv Joseph. The NiA Production of All This Intimacy will open in the Trustus Black Box on October 6th, at 7:30pm.
All This Intimacy is a comedy by popular contemporary playwright Rajiv Joseph. The plot plunges the audience into our modern age when we are all plugged into gadgets or glued to a chair in front of a screen - searching through an un-physical world to find a connection with any human being. It is hard to imagine that connecting with someone emotionally and physically would be any cause for alarm in our current world; however for thirty year old Ty it is. Ty is a mildly successful poet who, as an artist, should be in tune with the dealings of the human spirit but can't seem to put that knowledge into practice in his real life. In a bizarre thread of circumstances he has managed to get his ex-girlfriend, his married forty year old neighbor, and his eighteen year old student pregnant all in the same week. It's a secret he can't keep for long, and the events align to throw Ty down a long path of mishap and chaos. All This Intimacy successfully examines relationships between both friends and lovers and tries to dissect how lust can be an enemy to both. While poignant, the show is a side-splitting evening in the theatre.
New Trustus Company member Heather McCue was chosen to direct this comical NiA offering. "We all live on The Edge of catastrophe--both small and large," said McCue. "If something goes wrong, it can impact our morning, our day or our life for the foreseeable future. So, I appreciate when we get to see what goes wrong, but look at it through the prism of comedy. Life's stressful. It feels good to laugh instead of cry. And if we're being honest, it's easier to laugh when it's someone else's life going horribly awry."
A daring cast of well-known Columbia actors was assembled to bring this comedy to life in the intimate Trustus Black Box. Playing Ty, the future-father of three, is Christopher Harvey whom Trustus audiences will remember from such shows as The Glass Menagerie and Take Me Out. Playing the three expectant mothers will be Victoria Myers, Trinessa Dubas, and well-known Columbia actress Giulia Marie Dalbec-Matthews (Gypsy). Rounding out the cast is Nathan Dawson (Swing '39, Our Lady of 121st Street) playing a neurotic best friend and Latrell Brennan portraying a bridezilla-to-be.
All This Intimacy richly explores cataclysmic upheavals through the lens of comedy, and provides audiences with a night that's full of laughter. "It's a situational comedy," said director McCue. "Imagine Three's Company, if Jack slept with Janet, Chrissy and Mrs. Roper."
