The Water Engine by award-winning David Mamet is StageWorks' next staged reading. Originally written as a radio play in 1977 and previously produced as a full production by The Acting Ensemble in 1984, The Water Engine holds as much, if not more, relevance today as it did 35 years ago, especially in light of today's "smart" cars, hybrids and America's boom of technology.
Set in 1934 during Chicago's "The Century of Progress" scientific fair, Charles Lang has invented an engine that will run simply on distilled water. In an attempt to patent his ingenious device he is thwarted by shady lawyers, threats of illegally gained intellectual proprietorship, and a vast conspiracy network within America's scientific community.
Directed for AE by Lucinda Moriarty, and featuring a few of AE's original members along with our outstanding new members: Matthew Bell, Steven Cole, Melissa Gard, Phil Kwiecinski, Laurisa LeSure, Nicole Brinkmann Reeves, and Scot Shepley! The Water Engine takes place Monday, May 14, 2012 at 7:30 in Century Center's Recital Hall on the River Level. Admission is $5 (no reservations needed) and parking is free in Century Center's lot.
