Notre Dame's Department of Film, Television, and Theatre (FTT) announces four productions for its 2016/17 theatre season. As the season is tied directly to FTT's academic program, the Department strives for a diversity of period, form, and content and seeks to provide a broad range of artistic opportunities for both FTT majors and the general student population.

The season will open with ND Theatre NOW! (September 29 - October 9), a special event in the mainstage season which annually features a production realized entirely by student artists. This year, FTT presents two new one-act plays written by students, The Pink Pope by Taeyin ChoGlueck and In Paradisum by Tori Babcock. In Paradisum explores the chilling consequences of an enforced Utopia, while The Pink Pope offers a satirical feminist take on the role of women in the Catholic Church. Developed through FTT's playwriting program, led by professor Anne García-Romero, both plays will be directed by senior FTT students - Mary Patano will direct The Pink Pope and Jean Carlo Yunén Aróstegui will direct In Paradisum.

Later in the fall, the Department will produce Frankenstein by Tim Kelly, adapted for the stage from the novel by Mary Shelley. The production (November 9-13) marks 200 years from the summer of 2016, when Shelley conceived the idea for her Gothic novel, in which a young scientist constructs and animates a living Creature - with catastrophic results. FTT welcomes Chuck Gessert as guest director.

The spring semester kicks off with Lauren Gunderson's I and You (March 1-5). Confined to her home with a serious illness, seventeen-year-old Caroline first encounters classmate Anthony as an unwelcome visitor, when he arrives at her bedroom door to deliver her English homework. But as they spar over Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass, they spark an unexpected connection - a connection that leads to a breathtaking twist in the play's final moments, revealing the extraordinary nature of their bond. I and You will be directed by FTT professor Carys Kresny.

Rounding out the season will be Christ's Passion: Medieval Mystery Plays, adapted by FTT Professor Emeritus Mark Pilkinton and directed by current FTT professor Anton Juan. Christ's Passion presents a Biblical journey from Creation to Doomsday, including the Fall of Lucifer, Garden of Eden, Noah's Flood, and the Nativity, Crucifixion, and Resurrection of Christ.

Developed at Notre Dame in 1996 and originally produced in Washington Hall, FTT now presents Christ's Passion in the week leading up to Easter (April 5-12).

"What ties this season together," says Director of Theatre Kevin Dreyer, "is the idea of the creative impulse at its most fundamental. What does it mean to create something out of nothing, to breathe life into emptiness, to resurrect the dead? We're excited to explore these questions."

The hands-on nature of our curriculum, coupled with a very high degree of student-faculty interaction, provides students with a singular educational opportunity at a university known for its teaching excellence.
