Soul Foot comes to South Africa from 14 to 31 August 2014. The show of the continents will be showing at the Joburg Theatre. The international production fuses dance, music and acrobatics from eleven different countries into an impressive work of art.
Art connects: it builds bridges between different cultures, regardless of language and skin colour. As music, dance and acrobatics are universal, everyone is able to understand Soulfoot. In the international show, which will perform in Johannesburg at the Joburg Theatre in August 2014, 15 artists from eleven different nations celebrate their skills. They speak different languages but on stage are one : "In Soulfoot the world grows together in dance, music and acrobatics," says the producer of the show, Ingo Hagemann.
Soulfoot is inspired by dance and music styles from different countries in Europe, Africa, Asia and South America. The foundation of Soulfoot is rhythm: Fara Diouf from Senegal and Kaushik Basu from India provide percussion at the highest level and a rhythm that seeps into the veins. Dance at Soul Foot means beautiful imagery and acrobatic poetry: The impressive expressiveness of Jessica Nupen's choreography creates mesmerising images.
South African singer Mamsie Tsoane swirls over the stage and fills the room with her impressive voice. Andreas Wessels defies gravity as a skilled juggler and body artists. The two artists Thanh Dinh and Van Anh from Vietnam show athletic hand-to-hand acrobatics in a graceful aerial partnership giving the evening a poetic atmosphere. And of course Soulfoot is music: whether a melancholy flute, vibrating bass, playful Cora or a song that gets under your skin.
Throughout the evening the Cora player from Gambia: Aziz Kuyateh explains: "We are all on our way, we are all searching, we are all walkers," he explains his journey: the history of the human search for truth, meaningful happiness that is endless. We all seek our way which is never straight but full of detours and only those who move with open eyes and an open heart see what is happening around them. Aziz connects with the artists on stage through stories and anecdotes of migration narrated in his native language translated via subtitles. The stage serves as a springboard to delve into the different cultures. On a big screen images and videos are shown presenting the artists and landscapes from which they originate.
Soulfoot breaks genre boundaries and creates an interaction between dance and music. It showcases a whole new language full of creativity, multiculturalism and zest for life that forces the soul to vibrate. With exceptional sound and choreography the international and live virtuosos present a show full of grace, humor and poetry that deeply touches, provokes thoughts and entertains.
With humor and rousing passion for art, the performers interact with their audience who suddenly find themselves becoming a part of the show drumming, singing and dancing along.
