La Bohème in District Six celebrates the heritage of an important South African space and era through the lens of the classic opera storyline by Puccini. Because District Six was such a vibrant neighbourhood with a distinct culture and appreciation for arts and music, it is logical and serendipitous to combine the idea behind La Bohème with the historical legacy of District Six. La Bohème means “The Bohemians” and District Six was well known for its Bohemian atmosphere-a place where South African artists of all colours and religions could mix freely to share ideas and grow a collective culture in opposition to the Apartheid regime. It is well documented that artistic enclaves contribute to a diverse culture of understanding, whether set in a Paris garret like the original La Bohème or in District Six before the removals. La Bohème in District Six honours and celebrates the heritage of this important South African space and era through the lens of a classic opera storyline.
