“ABSOLUCY” rocked the socks off the 2011 National Arts Festival – Sue Morrell Stewart writing on the NAF Artsblog said “In this comedy cabaret Lucy Holgate is billed as “one hell of a funny lady” but the show is more than just that. She certainly entertains with her range of foot-tapping timeless hits, but her highly professional performance also sensitively draws one into the lonely double life of an alcoholic cabaret artist. As she so aptly says “alcohol won’t solve your problems, but neither will water or milk”! The show starts with her nervously arriving at what she thinks is her first Alcoholics Anonymous meeting and she then takes us on a musical journey of her life and relationship with alcohol, highlighted with important friends and family along the way.
She expertly takes on all the roles, from her alcoholic A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down – mom and meeting with ex-lover Guilio (where an awkward audience dad is involved in a little audience participation around Need somebody to love) – to a Poker face few months working at a casino in China and later her hilarious relationship with two fellow entertainers, Australian Ashleigh and American Fanny.
Her performances evoke both laughter and sorrow and when she finishes with Help me get my feet back on the ground one is left regretting the 50 minutes has gone so quickly and the enthusiastic encores from many families in the audience obviously meant they felt much the same.
