ANNIE, the world's favourite family musical, will be presented by Pieter Toerien and Hazel Feldman at Artscape for the 2016 festive season.
Set in 1930s New York during The Great Depression, brave young Annie is forced to live a life of misery and torment at Miss Hannigan's orphanage. Determined to find her real parents, her luck changes when she is chosen to spend Christmas at the residence of the famous billionaire, Oliver Warbucks. But the spiteful Miss Hannigan has other ideas and hatches a plan to spoil Annie's search.
With its award-winning book by Thomas Meehan and score by Charles Strouse and Martin Charnin, this stunning musical includes the unforgettable songs "It's a Hard Knock Life", "Easy Street", "I Don't Need Anything But You" and the eternal anthem of optimism, "Tomorrow".
Following an extensive six-month nationwide search, three Annies were found in Cape Town: Emma-Rose Blacher, Lilla Fleischmann and Caitlin Dicker. The cracking new production also stars Charon Williams-Ros (SWEENEY TODD, CABARET) as the tyrannical Miss Hannigan and Neels Clasen (MAMMA MIA!, WE WILL ROCK YOU) as Daddy Warbucks. Taryn Sudding (CATS, THE SOUND OF MUSIC) plays Grace, with Stephen Jubber (SUNSET BOULEVARD, JERSEY BOYS) as Rooster and Delray Halgryn (WEST SIDE STORY, MAYBE BABY IT'S YOU) as Lily. Mike Huff, Candice van Litsenborgh, Stefania du Toit, Jenna Robinson, Cat Lane, Michelle Lane and Hope Maimane complete an all-star South African cast.
Directed by Nick Winston and choreographed by Heather Scott-Martin, the resident director for the South African production is Anton Luitingh and the resident choreographer is Duane Alexander.
The Cape Toen season of ANNIE runs at the Artscape Opera House from 2 December 2016 to 8 January 2017. Performances run Tuesdays through Saturdays at 19:30, with additional Saturday matinees at 15:00 and Sunday shows at 14:00 and 17:30. Tickets cost from R150 to R500 via Computicket.
