Wessel Pretorius will perform at the Drostdy Theatre for the first time next month, when this intimate theatre in the heart of Stellenbosch will present his satirical drama, DIE ONTELBARE 48. Written, Directed and performed by Pretorius, the Stellenbosch run follows performances at the 2016 Aardklop Festival, where the play was nominated for the Best Actor, Best Director and Best Production, and at the Baxter Theatre as part of its 2017 Afrikaans Season.
On a Wednesday night in a small rural town in the Lowveld, a school hall is set up for the town's monthly movie night. Forty-eight members of the community gather together to see THE SOUND OF MUSIC and amongst them sits a murderer with a cunning plan. DIE ONTELBARE 48 is a microcosmic look at the everyday humanity that binds everyone together.
DIE ONTELBARE 48 is a new solo show from Pretorius, who won four kykNET Fiëstas in 2013 for his previous piece of solo theatre, ONT: Best Achievement in Solo Performance, Best Newly Created Afrikaans Performance, Best Upcoming Artist and Best Actor. Pretorius currently resides in Cape Town where he continues to invest in local theatre as actor, writer and theater-maker, having obtained his Drama degree from the University of Pretoria and an Honours in Acting at the University of Stellenbosch. He has been seen onstage in Yasmina Reza's ART, Christiaan Olwagen's POLITIK TRILOGIE and N IS VIR NEUROSE, P.G. du Plessis's 'N SEDER VAN IN WATERKLOOF, David Greig's DIE MONSTER IN DIE GANG, Saartjie Botha's BALBESIT, Edward Albee's WIE'S BANG VIR VIRGINIA WOOLF?, Philip Rademeyer's ADAM TWEE and Jean Genet's THE MAIDS. In 2013, Hennie van Greunen translated ONT- as UNDONE for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and, in 2014, it played the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown where it won a Gold Standard Bank Ovation Award. Other writing credits include WATERPAS, SLAAF, AL JULLE VOLKE, SANDTON CITY GROOTDOOP, DIE DAG IS BROS. In 2016, he debuted KLARA MAAS SE HART IS GEBREEK at KKNK as part of the festival's new Uitkamp-teater initiative.
