The Baxter Theatre Centre is proud to present an Afrikaans season consisting of two plays, DIE ONTELBARE 48 and AS DIE BROEK PAS, in October and November this year.
DIE ONTELBARE 48 is a solo theatre piece from the pen of Fiësta-winner Wessel Pretorius, who also appears in and directs the production. Pretorius won four kykNET Fiëstas in 2013 for his previous solo outing, ONT, for Best Achievement in Solo Performance, Best Newly Created Afrikaans Performance, Best Upcoming Artist and Best Actor.
On a Wednesday night in a small rural town in the Lowveld, the school hall is set up for the monthly movie night. Forty-eight members of the community gather together to see THE SOUND OF MUSIC and amongst them sits a murderer with a cunning plan. DIE ONTELBARE 48 is a microcosmic look at the everyday humanity that binds everyone together.
In AS DIE BROEK PAS, a play by the German playwright Manfred Karge (originally titled JACKE WIE HOSE), sees Antoinette Kellermann take on the role of a working class woman who takes on her husband's identity after his death in order to survive the precarious economic situation in Germany between the two World Wars. Her experience of the rituals of male behaviour, the increasing impact of Hitler and National Socialism on the German population, and her single pathetic attempt to return to womanhood and love, combine to form a gripping theatrical experience.
Translated by award-winning playwright and author William Anker with Marthinus Basson on board as designer and director, this piece of solo theatre won four kykNET Fiëstas in 2011 for Best Production, Best Theatre Design, Best Actress and Best Performance in a Solo Show.
DIE ONTELBARE 48 runs from 24 - 29 October at 20:00, with a 14:00 matinee on 29 October. AS DIE BROEK PAS runs from 3 - 12 November at 20:00, with 15:00 matinees on 5 and 12 November. Bookings for both shows are through Computicket. Tickets for both productions range from R80 - R120, with a discounted price of R150 for patrons who attend both productions.
