The next presentation in Victor Tichart's concert series is titled BUILD YOUR OWN CONCERT. For this concert, the audience will have the opportunity to choose their own items for the programme.
Items that audiences can choose include Richard Addinsell's "Warsaw Concerto", Johann Sebastian Bach's "Prelude and Fugue in G Major" from The Well-Tempered Clavier, Ferruccio Busoni's transription of Bach's "Chaconne in D Minor" and Frédéric Chopin's "Waltz in D-flat major" (the "Minute" waltz), "Polonaise in A Major" (the "Military" polonaise), "Nocturne in E-flat Major", "Nocturne in F Minor" and "Prelude in D-flat Major" (the "Raindrop" prelude).
Claude Debussy could be reprented in the programme by "Clair de Lune", "Rêverie", "Arabesque No. 1 in E major", "Golliwogg's Cakewalk" from Children's Corner or "Minstrels", while a selection from Edvard Grieg's Lyric Pieces (including "Wedding Day at Troldhaugen" or his "Sonata in E Minor" could also be heard. Fans of Alberto Ginastera or GeorgeGershwin might select "Danzas Argentinas" or "Rhapsody in Blue", while Joseph Haydn's "Piano Sonata in D major" and Scott Joplin's "The Entertainer" are also up for grabs.
Franz Liszt is represented by "Ballade in B Minor", while a trio of options from the works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is available, namely his "Piano Sonata No. 11 in A Major" (Alla Turca), "Twelve Variations on "Ah vous dirai-je, Maman" (the melody used for "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star", "Baa, Baa, Black Sheep" and the "Alphabet Song") or "Fantasia No. 3 in D Minor". Other possibilities include Sergei Rachmaninov's "Prelude in C-sharp Minor" and "Prelude in G minor".
Erik Satie's "Gymnopedie No. 1" could add some French flavour to the programme, while those preferring German music might select Robert Schumann's "Scenes from Childhood". Christian Sinding's "Frühlingsrauschen" (Rustle of Spring), Ludwig van Beethoven's "Fur Elise", "Moonlight Sonata" (the first movement), "Pathétique" sonata or the Sonatas in G Major and G Minor (opus 49) and Charles Williams's "Dream of Olwen" are also all available.
Tichart's own arrangements can be heard in "Fantasy on Themes from WEST SIDE STORY" Leonard Bernstein) and "Fantasy on THE PEARL FISHERS Duet" (Georges Bizet). Also on offer are several comedy segments, including "Phonetic Punctuation", "Inflationary Language", "Happy Birthday Send-up", "How to Write Your Own Gilbert and Sullivan Operetta" and "Wagner's Ring Cycle in 20 Minutes".
BUILD YOUR OWN CONCERT takes place on 7 August 2016 at 15:30 in the Chisholm Recital Room at the University of Cape Town's College of Music. Tickets cost R90 for adults, R80 for seniors and R70 for students and scholars and can be booked by phone on 072 969 7297. Audiences should email their choices for the concert directly to Victor Tichart and the programme will be compiled according to popular demand. There will also be a special guest performer.
