In TSWALO/SOURCE, lyrical prose, poetry and physical storytelling entwine to interrogate the rules that govern life on earth, such as power, creation, politics, connection, and intuition: the performer's expression of his 'source'. Written and performed by Billy Langa, the 50-minute piece is directed by Mahlatsi Mokgonyana and features music by John Withers.
TSWALO/SOURCE is a spiritual quest that gives the audiences the baton to walk through their own paradigm of ontology. Langa's poetry, prose and stories aim to furnish audiences with the necessary tools to experience a deep meditation that examines the themes of being, becoming and unbecoming.
TSWALO/SOURCE premiered in Johannesburg at The Plat4orm and toured to the Alexander Upstairs for its second run, where it will return for three performances this November. In between, TSWALO/SOURCE had its international premiere in Germany.
Writer-performer Langa is the co-founder and artistic director of the Kofifi Theatre Company, which is based in Sophiatown at the Trevor Huddleston Memorial Centre as well as a founding member of The Movement RSA. A graduate of the Market Theatre Laboratory, he continues to search and explore his love for physical theatre at Well Worn Theatre.
Director Mokgonyana is also a performer and storyteller, describing himself as a multi-disciplinary artist. The winner of 2011 Sibikwa Storytelling Without Borders, his directing credits include: NINE TO FIVERS ANTHEM and RUNNING (both at the WITS Theatre So Solo Festival), SEE ME NAKED (Market Theatre Laboratory) and COCKROACH: A TRILOGY (Moses Molelekwa Arts Centre). Mahlatsi is also a facilitator for the Hillbrow Theatre Project for their annual Inner City Schools Festival and a founding member of The Movement RSA.
