The multi award-winning theatre collective, The Mechanicals, have set out over the past 5 years to present, to a general public, classics from the repertoire of world drama; allowing a new generation of theatre makers and theatre audiences the privilege of engaging with past master craftsmen.
This year they have taken the opportunity to add to the wonderful diversity of theatre practice in Cape Town by focusing on the great Russian playwright, Anton Chekhov. A master craftsman in detailing the domestic and human lives of his time through a curious -comic lens; allowing the themes to resonate, to remain pertinent and finally to impact on our contemporary lives.
This season celebrates this iconic dramatist's work in Afrikaans (Die Kersieboord directed by Sandra Temmingh) and in English (The Bear and The Proposal directed by Chris Weare). Bringing to the stage wonderful actors such as Oscar Petersen, Tinarie Van Wyk Loots, Carel Nel, Wilhelm Van Der Walt, Nandi Horak, Roxanne Blaise, Sjaka September, Bianca Flanders and Marvin Beukes. Audiences will have the exciting privilege of seeing Adrian Collins opposite Gina Pauling for the first time in both The Bear and The Proposal alongside Matthew Roberts.
Die Kersieboord runs today, 6 - 17 Aug and 28 - 31 August Tuesday - Saturday at 20:00
The Proposal (20:00) and The Bear (21:15) run Tuesday to Sunday 22 - 27 August and 1 - 12 September.
