At the 11th annual Naledi Theatre Awards held at Gold Reef City in Johannesburg last week, South Africa's most prolific playwright Athol Fugard, together with co-writer Paula Fourie, was awarded the Naledi for Best New South African Script for his highly acclaimed play THE SHADOW OF THE HUMMINGBIRD that sold out at the Fugard Studio Theatre in 2014 before moving to the Market Theatre.

The Fugard Theatre's production of Richard O'Brien's cult hit musical THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW, directed by Matthew Wild, took four awards. Brendan van Rhyn, who wowed audiences in Cape Town and Johannesburg in 444 performances as the iconic Frank 'n Furter, shared the award for Best Male Performance in a Musical with Jonathan Roxmouth for CALL ME LEE. Roxmouth will be seen as Tony in the Fugard's first out of house, grand-scale production of WEST SIDE STORY, coming up at the Artscape Opera House in July this year.

In the Best Musical Director category, Charl-Johan Lingenfelder and Stefan Lombard shared the Naledi for their musical contribution to the production that also took awards for Best Sound Design and Best Lighting Design for Akbar Khan and Daniel Galloway respectively. Aside from being an accomplished lighting designer, Daniel Galloway is also the Executive Director of the Fugard Theatre that is owned by Executive Founding Producer Eric Abraham.

A HUMAN BEING DIED THAT NIGHT won Best Cutting Edge Production. The play premiered at the Fugard Studio Theatre in 2014, before transferring to The Market Theatre in Johannesburg. It opens in New York at BAM next month.

The Naledi Theatre Awards reflect the vibrant and diverse nature of the South African theatrical landscape, rewarding theatre excellence in South African theatre.

The Fugard Theatre is proud to bear Athol Fugard's name and honours him by providing a crucible of creativity and beacon of humanity for all South Africans. For details about current and forthcoming productions at the Fugard Theatre, please visit the theatre's official website.
