Five years on from its official opening in February 2010, the Fugard Theatre announces its first out of house production. In July of this year, Eric Abraham and the Fugard Theatre will proudly present a grand-scale four week season of Leonard Bernstein, Arthur Laurents and Stephen Sondheim's musical theatre masterpiece WEST SIDE STORY, based on a conception of Jerome Robbins. From the creators and producers of the Fugard Theatre's runaway smash hit musical THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW, and the highly anticipated CABARET (which opens on 10 March at the Fugard Theatre), comes a production of one of the world's greatest musicals, WEST SIDE STORY.
Under the direction of Matthew Wild, the musical direction of Charl-Johan Lingenfelder and with choreography by Louisa Talbot, the Fugard Theatre team will present the best of South African theatre talent in their Fugard Theatre production of this classical masterpiece, which first premiered on Broadway in 1957. With a full cast of 40, and the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra in the orchestra pit, this will be a must-see for the whole family and a highlight on the 2015 musical theatre calendar in South Africa.
The powerful cast will be led by South African theatre stars Jonathan Roxmouth (PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, SUNSET BOULEVARD, GREASE) as Tony, Lynelle Kenned (BLOOD BROTHERS, SHOW BOAT, ORPHEUS IN AFRICA) as Maria , Bianca Le Grange (BLOOD BROTHERS) as Anita , Christopher Jaftha (DIRTY DANCING) as Bernardo and Daniel Buys (JERSEY BOYS, THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW) as Action.
