The Fugard Theatre's THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW will be returning to Cape Town from 22 July to 2 November 2014 owing to huge popular demand. Produced by Eric Abraham and the Fugard Theatre, Richard O'Brien's iconic smash hit rock musical THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW, which set Cape Town and Johannesburg alight for months of sell out performances last year, will once again run at the Fugard Theatre, with top stage, film and TV star Terence Bridgett (ISIDINGO, ROUGH OR SMOOTH, SEWENDE LAAN, MACBETH, A WINTER'S TALE) starring as the quirky Narrator for the first three weeks of the return season.
The Fugard Theatre's production of this global musical sensation enjoyed a 27 week sold out season in 2013 at the Fugard Theatre in Cape Town playing to over 60 000 people and extending no fewer than three times before enjoying a completely sold out 10-week run at Joburg's Montecasino Theatre earlier this year.
THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW, directed by Matthew Wild with musical direction by Charl-Johan Lingenfelder and choreography by Louisa Talbot, was nominated for no less than 9 prestigious Fleur du Cap Awards earlier this year, with Brendan van Rhyn, Daneel van der Walt and Andrew Laubscher winning as Best Leading Actor in a Musical, Best Supporting Actress in a Musical and Best Supporting Actor in a Musical respectively.
The Fugard Theatre's Executive Director Daniel Galloway said, "What was initially planned for 10 weeks in our schedule in 2013 has turned out to be the most incredible monster - we are all very proud of the production and we are thrilled that Cape Town will not let the production rest".
The all-South African cast of THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW is led by Brendan van Rhyn as Dr Frank-N-Furter, Andrew Laubscher as Riff Raff, Daneel van der Walt as Magenta and 2013 Fleur du Cap nominees Paul du Toit as Brad, Jenny Stead as Janet and Dominique Maher as Columbia. Pierre van Heerden plays Dr Scott and Eddie and Shaun Smit plays the buff, tanned blonde-haired Rocky. Singing sensation Lucy Tops returns to her role as the Usherette for the full Cape Town return season, while Adrian Galley joins the cast once again from 12 August as the Narrator. Jemma Shankland, Jenna Robinson-Child, Emile Doubell, Sven-Eric Muller and Zolani Shangase magnificently support the core company.
The live onstage band, led by Charl-Johan Lingenfelder and featuring Kate Borthwick, Rob Ogilvie, Zeke Le Grange, Alessandro Batazzi and Justin Maree, accompanies the cast every night as they belt out the iconic hit songs "Science Fiction/Double Feature", "Dammit, Janet!", "Sweet Transvestite" and "The Time Warp".
Additional creative members on the production are set designer Tina Driedijk (SUOR ANGELICA, THE RAKE'S PROGRESS), costume designer Penny Simpson (EVITA, SUNSET BOULEVARD), sound designer Aki Khan (for Eastern Acoustics) and lighting designer Daniel Galloway (KAT AND THE KINGS, A HUMAN BEING DIED THAT NIGHT). Both Simpson and Galloway received nominations in their respective categories at this year's Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards. Graphic designs for the show are by James Cooke and the video animation is designed by Anwar McWhite.
Show specific Participation Packs are a huge hit and make for even more fun as fabulously dressed up, fun loving theatregoers throw confetti, wave glowsticks and snap their plastic gloves as instructed by the Narrator. Participation Packs are for sale nightly at the theatre. There will be Official Dress Up Nights at each 8pm performance every Friday and Saturday night beginning on Friday 25 July 2014. The best-dressed person will win an apple iPad mini at the end of the season. For THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW fanatics there are also two special Halloween Performances on Friday 31 October at 7pm and 10:30pm.
