Roland Perold and Callum Tilbury take the stage as Gary
Gershwin and Aria Grey in THE PITCH

THE PITCH, a new musical play by Callum Tilbury and Roland Perold, will premiere at the Alexander Bar and Café's Upstairs Theatre this March. Tilbury has written the book for the show, also supplying additional lyrics for Perold's original score. Musical arrangements for THE PITCH are by David Lubbe.

THE PITCH is a new pseudo-musical-super-comedy about corruption, greed, and what happens when capitalism meets theatre. When the Afropol Corporation decides to commission a new musical about Africa, they make the mistake of employing the "talents" of Aria Grey and Gary Gershwin, two washed-up theatrical has-beens desperate to make a quick buck. THE PITCH is play with music about a pitch for a musical play set to rival the likes of SARAFINA and all of its sequels.

The production team brings together three young South African talents.

Actor, writer, drag queen and voice artist Callum Tilbury graduated with a degree in Theatre and Performance (specialising in theatre-making) from the University of Cape Town. He has performed in shows like UHM... (which he also co-created as part of The Papercut Collective, winning the Best Student Theatre Writing Award at the National Arts Festival in 2014 and having subsequently been published by Junkets), HAMLET and THE INCREDIBLE JOURNEY. His current play, DOCTOR GODENSTEIN'S MAN, is currently playing at the Galloway Theatre. His drag persona, Lady Aria Grey was born from Tilbury's desire to challenge society in a humorous and fabulous manner, and this is her first appearance in a full-length production.

Roland Perold is a composer, actor, theatre-maker and outreach educator involving himself in all things musical within the exciting world of theatre. This is his fourth original musical theatre work, the most recent being YOU BET YOUR LIFE! A graduate of the Waterfront Theatre School, Perold also holds a Masters Degree in Music (Songwriting) from Bath Spa University. Perold's admiration for the composers of the past has seen him showcase their work in several cabaret performances. At Cape Town Opera, Perold is the Outreach Composer in Residence, working to nurture a love of opera in a new generation of school children by mounting miniature versions of well-known operas alongside original works embracing storytelling in local communities.

David Lubbe is a pianist and teacher in the Cape Town area. After graduating from the University of Stellenbosch, David has recently returned to the wonderful world of music, working as an accompanist, teacher and performer. As a student, Lubbe won the Hugo van der Spuy Cup for best accompanist, was first runner up in the inaugural Nina Schumann Overseas Bursary Competition and performed with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra as part of the Youth Music Festival. Lubbe performs, accompanies and teaches in and around Cape Town, mainly involving himself with the development of young musicians.

THE PITCH runs from 7 - 19 March at the Alexander Bar's Upstairs Theatre at 9pm. Tickets cost R80-R90 and can be booked online at the Alexander Bar website or purchased at the bar. For telephone bookings and enquiries, call 021 300 1652. Alexander Bar & Café is situated at 76 Strand Street in the Cape Town city centre and can be followed on Facebook and Twitter.
