South African State Theatre presents 'Capital Arts Festival 2010: A Tour of the World in Tshwane,' 25 August - 7 September.
The City of Tshwane, South Africa's capital City, is graced by the grandeur of the Union Buildings, powered by the importance of the Reserve Bank, enriched by the offerings of The South African State Theatre, and home to global embassies and consulates; a melting pot of language, culture and experience.
Hosted by the prestigious South African State Theatre, the Capital Arts Festival has brought a unique platform for meeting different people and interacting with different cultures. Together with artists who are real masters of communication through art, this festival is a strong builder of bridges between international cultures.
The Embassy of Japan will present 'East Meets Africa: Art Exhibition Japanese Festival for Centennial Celebrations.'How many people know that Jan van Riebeeck was stationed in Japan before he became Commander of the Cape in 1652? How many have ever heard of an African with a Japanese name 'Yasuke', who fought bravely in battle for a legendary Japanese feudal lord in the 16th Century? Or a Chinese admiral Zheng He,who led an enormous fleet to East Africa in the 15th century?

World-class jazz from the Gauteng Jazz Orchestra - performing on a double bill with Argentina's Duet Plana-Marti from Argentina Imaginary Tango and FolkloreThe Duet Plana-Marti was formed in 1987 as an offshoot of the musical group Maiz in Argentina. The duet (Beti Plana on flute and Polo Marti on guitar) give their interpretation of classical music for flute and guitar (JS Bach, Kachaturian, Bartok, Lambertini) as well as traditional Cuyan and Argentinian songs, Latinamerican Folklore in all its forms and expressions.
BLACK EAGLE SOUNDLong Sessions is the latest and most successful show by Black Eagle Sound which fuses extreme music genres and creates a fusion of modern sounds. The show was recently performed most successfully at STONE in Hatfield Pretoria during the Fifa Word Cup 2010, and the rave reviews received inspired Black Eagle Sound to perform at the Capital Arts Festival. The unifying performance brings reggae, jazz and lounge music audiences together.
TAIKO means drum in Japanese and Wadaiko means Japanese drum. Japanese drums have developed into a wide range of percussion instruments which are used in both Japanese folk and classical musical traditions. The resonance and beat of Wadaiko has long been regarded as the sound of the Japanese soul - like a beat of sunshine falling on the earth or a whisper from the blue ocean. It has been the heartbeat of Japanese Festivals since ancient times, and the drumming group Tachibana Taiko 'Hibikiza' will deliver the nature, history, culture and heart of Japan to the people of South Africa.
