Round Off 2018 With The World's Best Theatre, Opera, Ballet at Fugard Bioscope  Image

The enticing line-up for the second half of the 2018 Fugard Bioscope World Arts Cinema Season has been announced. The programme starts onSunday 14th October with the Bolshoi Ballet's captivating production of COPPÉLIA.

Screenings will start at the earlier time of 10am to accommodate Sunday matinee performances in the Fugard Theatre. Guests can make a morning of it and enjoy a delicious range of snacks, drinks and the finest coffee at the Fugard Theatre coffee shop and bar, which open from 9am.

The Fugard Bioscope presents screenings of the world's best recorded live theatre, opera and ballet productions to be enjoyed from the comfort of a Fugard Theatre seat. With screenings on the Fugard's full size high definition cinema screen and a 7.1 dolby digital surround sound system, be transported to the heart of the action on stage.

Watch productions by prestigious companies such as the National Theatre, Royal Ballet, Royal Opera House, Bolshoi Ballet and the Royal Shakespeare Company.

"We are thrilled to announce this second part of our 2018 Bioscope World Arts Cinema Season at The Fugard Theatre," says Greg Karvellas, Resident Director and Curator of the Cinema Season. "Along with our customary offering of stunning ballet, theatre and opera production offerings, we have added some exciting new Comédie-Française productions which are performed in French with English subtitles. We look forward to welcoming our regular as well as new patrons to our screenings."

Ballet lovers are spoilt for choice including classics such as romantic masterpiece LA SYLPHIDE and DON QUIXOTE as well as much loved newer ones such as Kenneth MacMillan's MAYERLING. Opera aficionados won't want to miss the Royal Opera House's five-star production of THE QUEEN OF SPADES, Tchaikovsky's intense opera of obsession and the supernatural, which is conducted by Antonio Pappano, Music Director of The Royal Opera.

As always the programme is a theatre-goer's treat with a selection that includes the Royal Shakespeare Company's ROMEO AND JULIET, which The Guardian UK described as a 'swift, lively production' and Whatsonstage called a 'Youthful and energetic take on Shakespeare's tragedy'.

There's also National Theatre Live's HAMLET starring Academy Award nominee Benedict Cumberbatch, their THE MADNESS OF GEORGE III by Alan Bennett and JULIE, a new version of August Strindberg's play Miss Julie directed by Carrie Cracknell (NT Live: The Deep Blue Sea). Comédie Française'sCYRANO DE BERGERAC, which won six Molière awards, France's official theatre awards, will be screened on 16 December.

Catch festive season favourite THE NUTCRACKER, presented by the Royal Ballet on 23 December, while February 2019 brings a French flavor with a series of wonderful comedies from Comédie-Française, one of France's most respected theatres and home to Molière's historic theatre troupe.

Screenings take place at the Fugard Theatre on Sundays at 10am.Tickets cost R100 and can be booked directly through the Fugard Theatre box office on 021 461 4554 or online at www.thefugard.com There is a 20% discount for Friends of the Fugard and a 15% discount for pensioners. These discounted tickets are available through the box office.

The Fugard foyer bar is open from 9am on Sundays, serving a range of delicious light snacks as well as the finest coffee and selection of drinks.
