Shaleen Surtie-Richards, Richard September and
Crystal Donna Roberts in RONDOMSKRIK

Wordsmith's Theatre Factory and ABSA KKNK, with the support of the LW Hiemstra Trust will stage RONDOMSKRIK at the Baxter Theatre this November. Following its debut at the 2014 ABSA KKNK, the play was nominated for six Kanna Awards and received the ATKV Woordveertjie for Best New Script.

RONDOMSKRIK, a small town in betweem the Karoo and the Overberg, is the place where Jasmien Jacobs, who has been a teacher for her whole life, finds herself carrying the torch passed onto her by her father. Jasmien's father taught her that the most important thing one can teach children is that they have the power to make their lives better - even if it means getting away from their circumstances and everything that they know. When she meets Antjie Fortuin, a girl in whom the flame of potential burns high, she tries to put her on the path towards upliftment, in spite of the gansters, alcohol abuse and drug dens that surround her and the parents who are tragically absent from her life. But then, one Friday night, a convergence of evil, indifference and looking away change their lives forever.

The story of Antjie Fortuin, a teenager who possesses all the potential to work her way to a better life, is a story that plays out daily on the Cape Flats, in Delft, Soweto, Bellville and even Grassy Park, where young South Africans have to deal with the very real dangers of violence, drugs, alcohol and rape. Rachelle Greeff's play takes the rape and murder of Anene Booysen as a starting point for this strikingly original piece of theatre. The script is funny, yet touching, and ultimately focuses on the people around the heart-rending story of Antjie Fortuin and tries to identify ways in which we can help our children to fulfil their potential.

The cast of RONDOMSKRIK is headlined by Shaleen Surtie-Richards and also includes Lee-Ann van Rooy, Crystal Donna Roberts and Richard September. The play is directed by Hennie van Greunen.

RONDOMSKRIK runs at the Baxter Theatre until from 5-22 November, with tickets costing R90-R110. Bookings can be made through Computicket.
