Raine Waring will appear in WAIT

WAIT, a 40-minute physical theatre performance piece written and performed by Raine Waring, will be performed at the Alexander Bar's Upstairs Theatre this July. The piece made its debut at the 2016 New Talent Weekend at the Masque Theatre in May.

In WAIT, Monica van Zyl is waiting to be saved, waiting for the return of her lover, waiting for the mirror to reflect a more favourable reflection, waiting to be let out of her cage and most importantly, waiting to be accepted. This original one-woman play explores the complexity of gender as seen through the eyes of a woman struggling with her identity, with writer-performer Waring delving into the psyche of a someone who is fraught with insecurity.

WAIT seeks to uncover the difficulties that women experience as they try to free themselves from the cage in which society traps them. Waring hopes that the piece will be received as a daring, innovative, thought-provoking and outspoken look at the struggles and tribulations of being a woman in today's society. She puts the mind of one individual woman under the spotlight so as to examine the relentless search for acceptance and the desperate desire for freedom and love that many women seem to face. The physical style of performance adopted in the piece is used to manifest thoughts, emotions and inner states of being through the body.

Directed by Nathalie Vijver, the Head of the Drama Department at the Cape Academy of Performing Arts, of which Waring is a graduate, and the Director of the Nathalie Vijver School of Drama, WAIT tells a truthful story that will encourages audiences to question themselves and their roles in society.

WAIT runs from 21 - 23 July. Tickets cost R80-R90 and can be booked online at the Alexander Bar website or purchased at the bar. For telephone bookings and enquiries, call 021 300 1652. Alexander Bar & Café is situated at 76 Strand Street in the Cape Town city centre and can be followed on Facebook and Twitter.
