The Young Vic is teaming up with the Royal Opera House, the Repons Foundation and the Isango Ensemble to bring a musical inspired by one refugee's true story to the Baxter Theatre Centre's Flipside venue this August. A MAN OF GOOD HOPE is based on the book by Jonny Steinberg and has been adapted for the stage by the Isango Ensemble under the direction of Mark Dornford-May.
A MAN OF GOOD HOPE follows a young Somalian refugee heading to South Africa to seek new opportunities. As he arrives, horrific xenophobic violence erupts and the country and his plans descend into chaos.Performed mainly through music, this new stage adaptation features haunting marimbas and vocal performances by the 23-strong ensemble. The company is made up of both classically trained and untrained singers from the townships surrounding Cape Town. The ensemble includes Pauline Malefane, Noluthando Boqwana, Ayanda Eleki, Zamile Gantana, Sifiso Lupuzi, Bongiwe Mapassa, Zanele Mbatha, Katlego Mmusi, Zoleka Mpotsha, Busisiwe Ngejane, Sonwabo Ntshata, Luvo Rasemeni, Masakane Sotayisi, Luvo Tamba and Ayanda Tikolo.
Musical direction for A MAN OF GOOD HOPE is by Mandisi Dyantyis (who will also conduct the peerformances) and Pauline Malefane. Musical staging and choreography has been created for the piece by Lungelo Ngamlana. Mannie Manim will handle the lighting design.
