Two of South Africa's most popular cabaret performers, the legendary Michele Maxwell and debonair Roland Perold, join together to bring music lovers a delightful new show at Kalk Bay Theatre from 7 to 31 May.
Presented by ROLSKA Productions and directed by Paul Griffiths, Show and Tell takes a look at the highs and lows of showbiz! The glitz, the glam, and then the underbelly - the show and the tell - of the entertainment industry. With a light touch and lots of gusto it takes a look at some of the trials and tribulations that industry folk contend with every day.
Sharing a baby grand, Perold and Maxwell have compiled exciting new arrangements of classic songs from Sondheim to Berlin to Randy Newman with a few rare gems thrown into the mix whilst entertaining audiences with their exceptional musical talent. There's even some occasional ukulele and vocal percussion to excite our die-hard musicophiles.
"Growing up, visiting the theatre and thinking: 'Wow! That looks like fun, I want to do that!' is one thing" says Perold who is also the founder of ROLSKA Productions, producers of hits such as Coward & Cole with Godfrey Johnson. "But years later when you're in the biz, working late nights and trying to pick up extra gigs at the weekend to pay the rent you have to wonder: 'What the heck!?'. Still, there's something about it that grabs you by the collar and drags you back to the boards every time... You'd need an epic trilogy to scratch the surface of this Freudian minefield; nonetheless Michele and I will attempt to breach it in 70 min!".
Maxwell is one of SA's most respected and versatile artists - actress, singer, pianist, and much more, her career has spanned stage and screen here and internationally. She was involved in the early days of the Space, Market and Baxter Theatres, and has performed on the West End in London, in Boogie and Poppie Nongena. While in the UK, she appeared on TV shows such Not the Nine O'Clock News and The Jasper Carrot Show. Michele has worked with Mike Oldfield, and her musical talent has also taken her to Ireland, Holland, Belgium, Germany, Sweden, Finland and Israel. She is a much-loved figure on South African television, for roles in programmes such as Isidingo, Fishy Feshuns and Scandal, and has appeared in numerous films. Michele has an extensive list of stage, musical theatre and cabaret credits, including her Fleur du Cap nominated one-woman cabaret, C'est La Vie.
Perold is no stranger to Kalk Bay Theatre, having performed in productions such as I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change and Edges, and as the founder of ROLSKA Productions, produced the sold-out Coward & Cole featuring himself and Godfrey Johnson.
An accomplished actor, musical director and producer, Perold holds a BMus Degree from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, a Performer's Licentiate in Musical Theatre from Trinity College and a MMus Degree from Bath Spa University in the U.K. He has performed in and been musical director for numerous productions and in 2009 established ROLSKA Productions which won a Standard Bank Ovation Award in 2010 for I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change at the National Arts Festival. The company was also invited to present the award winning song cycle Edges on the Arena Platform at the 2011 Festival. In 2013 he put on his first one man show "Musical Theatre Memory Lane" which was a festival favourite among musical theatre lovers at Grahamsown and also travelled to the UK alongside his second original musical "The Last Note" which played Grahamstown, Cape Town and Bath. Perold is the PANSA Western Cape Chairperson and acts as resident producer for the Waterfront Theatre School.
Paul Griffiths' professional career in theatre started as an actor in musical theatre productions including shows such as Hair, Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita. He spent eight years in London, where he completed an MA with Distinction in Theatre Directing from Middlesex University. He was also Education Associate for The Orange Tree Theatre in Richmond where he directed the theatre's Shakespeare-in-Schools Programme and was then appointed as Associate Director of The Bridewell Theatre and Acting Artistic Director. In 2006 Paul was appointed head of Drama and Musical Theatre at the Waterfront Theatre School and his company 'Big Leaf Productions' produces numerous national plays and musicals. He became a partner at the School in 2011.
