Set to the be the Afrikaans rock event of the year, ROCK IN MY TAAL will take place at Carnival City on 20 May with a line-up that includes Francois van Coke, Die Heuwels Fantasties, SAARKIE, The Sweet Resistance and National Incident. Local broadcasting personality and singer Martin Bester will act as the MC for the evening.
Bester was born in Bethal in Mpumalanga en grew up in Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape. While completing his degree in psychology and isiXhosa, he joined the erstwhile University of Port Elizabeth's campus radio station. His work there opened the door to a slot on the regional radio station, Algoa FM. While presenting the morning programme there, he received an offer to host a show on South Africa's largest commercial radio station, Jacaranda FM. He currently presents the Martin Bester Drive show between 16:00 and 19:00, for which he has twice been awarded the Best Afternoon Presenter at the national MTN Radio Awards. Bester is also the lead singer of the South African Music Award-nominated alternative rock group, Kinky Robot. Their radio hits include "Hobie Beach" and "Lover of Life". They have performed throughout the country and overseas, at the famous Apollo Theatre in London.
Martin's television presentation career includes programs like TWEESTRYD, D.K.N.T, LEKKER BESTER and LEKKER SPORT. His love for acting has led to stage performances in, among other things, Athol Fugard's HELLO AND GOODBYE, as well as roles in films such as VROU SOEK BOER, PRETVILLE and SONSKYN BEPERK, which will be released soon.
