After several years of working on the biggest comedy line-up shows in South Africa, Mark Banks stages his triumphant return to the one-man stand up show circuit with the hit production, BANKSRUPT!
Years in the making, BANKSRUPT! promises to be his greatest comedy work yet described by witnesses as "screamingly funny" and "up to the minute". With stand-up, sketch and video seamlessly interwoven, this is the show comedy fans in the Mother City should not ignore. Banks explains the title BANKSRUPT! is about where we are as a nation - financially, morally, and mentally broke - and he duly sketches out the villains behind this sorry state in which the country finds itself, obviously all tongue-in-cheek to keep it hilarious and interesting.
John Vlismas, Creative Director of Whacked: Special Project, refers to Banks as a pioneer of the sketch format: "Mark's sketch work in the 80s was edgy, theatrical, subversive and very inventive. When I saw him for the first time in
The Playhouse Studio, it was a powerful moment for me because I suddenly knew clearly what I wanted to do". He continues to explain that Banks is the quintessential jester, an anarchist with intellect and insight: he puts comedy and discomfort right next to each other, and the results are fantastic. With this show, Whacked has taken the audience a little further into the Banks world.
BANKSRUPT! runs at the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town on Wednesdays to Saturdays at 8:30pm from today, 31 July until 10 August 2013 with tickets R100 throughout via Computicket or 08619158000. For corporate and group bookings call Sharon on 0216803962. The show has an age restriction of PG16.
