MATE, a new 65-minute tragicomedy written and directed by Samantha Gray, will make its bow at the Alexander Bar, Café and Theatre this February. An award-winning film-maker, Gray returns to stage work with this, her sophomore play, following her a solo show, A WOMAN'S BUM IS LIKE THE MOON.
Set in a "Love Recovery" workshop, MATE introduces three women experiencing the raw and painfully humorous realities of single life. MATE walks through the cesspit of love, heartbreak, hope and all the grey bits in between, with Gray having based the events of this hybrid of live and filmed performance on real-life events.
Gray will also perform in MATE, joined on stage by Alicia McCormick. McCormick, herself the straight-laced alter ego of Burlesque sensation Cookie von Tastee, was most recently seen in ANGELS ON HORSEBACK: RELOADED, DIRTY WORDS and THE THINGS YOU LEFT BEHIND.
Sometimes crass, loud-mouthed and white knuckled, MATE tackles dating, dining and sixty-nine-ing - and all other matters of the heart too. The production runs on selected dates from 6 - 18 February at 21:00. Tickets are available from the Alexander Bar website. Tickets cost R100 if booked and prepaid online, while tickets will also be available at the door for R110. For telephone enquiries, call 021 300 1652. The Alexander Bar, Café and Theatre is situated at 76 Strand Street in the Cape Town city centre and can be followed on Facebook and Twitter.
