Kosie Smit will present Marion Holm en Chris Vorster's one-woman comedy show, MARION HOLM VIR BEGINNERS, with Holm on stage and Vorster directing, from tonight at the Montecasino Theatre and Studio in Johannesburg, with a transfer to Theatre on the Bay in Cape Town this coming August. Holm is already well-known to South African audiences - especially at festivals - for her distinctive and comic solo shows. Producer Smit decided that Holm's talent deserves a wider audience, leading to this main stem production that has been created especially for this two-stop tour.
In MARION HOLM FOR BEGINNERS, Holm introduces herself to those who have not even seen any one of her twelve one-woman shows. Taking some of the highlights from her previous performances and weaving them together in a new way, Holm stays true to the style of theatre presentation for which she has become known. She tells stories from everyday life with which everyone can identify - precisely the reason why audiences find her shows so funny. Holm will regale patrons with tales describing a horrorfic holiday in Zanzibar, the pain of mammograms, irritation with car guards, her family, mishaps on the Orange River and more. Holm's comedy is mostly about herself and her own mistakes and failures, with no audience participation to speak of; Holm simply lets her audiences laugh without picking on anyone from the stage.
Holm began working in 2004 with Hennie van Greunen as her co-writer and director, with five shows being born from their collaboration: SUSSIE IS NOU SUUR; SUSSIE RAFEL NOU UIT; BRAAIVLEIS, RUGBY, SUNNY SKIES EN... SUSSIE!, SUSSIE: SURVIVOR (KUILSRIVIER) and CIRQUE DU SUSSIE. From 2009, Holm began working alongside Vorster, with the pair having produced SUSSIE: CHEERS!, MET DIE HOLM GEBORE, HOLM@IAFRICA.COM, HOLMAKIESIE, HOLM: GEMARIONNEER and HOL MARION! Their latest presentation, DIE KAAP IS WEER HOLMS, was presented earlier this year. In a time where many actors are out of work, Holm continues to create her own shows, of which audiences apparently cannot get enough. She has been nominated for Fiësta Awards in 2010, 2011, 2012 en 2014.
MARION HOLM VIR BEGINNERS opens in Johannesburg tonight, running until 9 August at the Montecasino Theatre and Studio, before transferring to Theatre on the Bay in Cape Town for a run from 12 - 22 August. Tickets are available through Computicket.
