The hit musical revue, I Am What I Am, will be performed at Kalk Bay Theatre from 6 to 16 March.
The show is described as a riveting cocktail of contemporary musical theatre songs that is bound to elicit thigh-slapping, fist-pumping excitement. It played to sold-out houses at Alexander Upstairs in 2012 and was described by Megan's Head as "slick, well rehearsed and well directed...a most fabulous way to spend an hour, in the company of some sexy, young talent."
Directed by Garth Tavares, the show features the talented trio of rising stars Angela Inglis, Natasha Dryden and Bethany Dickson Mahnke, performing as The Pinups. Enjoy music from shows such as Wicked, Disenchanted, Edges, I Love You Because, Chorus Line and I Love you, you're perfect, now change, to name a few.
The music and lyric in the songs also helps to draw a comical contrast to the way these women truly feel inside. When life gave them lemons, they decided to chop them up and balance them neatly on three tequila shots! It is a fun-filled musical evening not to be missed.
Physiotherapist by day and actress by night, Angela was recently seen on the Kalk Bay Theatre stage in ImproGuise's Improv Festival. She graduated from the Waterfront Theatre School in 2011 where she received The Most Outstanding Student Award, and has performed in numerous productions. She was a co-winner, with Natatsha Dryden, of the Imbewu Trust's 2012 Fly Free Bursary which provided her with the opportunity to produce and perform in Se-My Alles at the National Arts Festival. She conceptualised and produces I Am What I Am.
Natasha Dryden is a fellow Waterfront Theatre School Graduate, and co-winner of the Fly Free Bursary. She has experience both on and off the stage, working on productions such as Jack and The Beanstalk and Die Rebellie van Lafras Verwey as well as starring alongside Albert Maritz in the UCT short film, Wildernis.
Bethany Dickson Mahnke's credits include performing in Pieter Toerien and Hazel Feldman's production of High School Musical Live on Stage in South Africa and in China, as well as Mr Toerien's production of Grease, in which she played the role of Sandy. The production ran in South African and toured to Hong Kong and New Zealand. Bethany has performed in a string of other productions, including Mike McCullagh's 90's Mania; Louisa in The Sound of Music and Louise in Carousel.
Garth Tavares is a seasoned and award-winning musical director, choreographer and performer.
