The second in the trilogy of Nicholas Ellenbogen's plays based in Bulawayo is THE LOBENGULA STREET HARD COVER BOOK CLUB. This follows the production of THE BULAWAYO BOOGIE earlier this year.
Imagine - the township meets the Bard! With THE LOBENGULA STREET HARD COVER BOOK CLUB, Ellenbogen aims to explore just that, through the life of an extraordinary young Zimbabwean who has a passion for books and particularly for Shakespeare.
M'linga Mpofu reveals the classic Zimbabwean way of dealing with what life throws at you; by just giving it a try. He just starts a book business, in a dusty lane between two buildings, simply because he loves books. A school dropout of only 16 years old, Mpofu and a teacher from a local high school spend the evening indulging in the wonder of books and in the company of the master playwright. The Rosebank Theatre invites audiences to come and join this quirky book club gathering, at the rather messy heart of downtown Bulawayo, and to help answer the question of whether Shakespeare is "dead", while celebrating the Bard's birth and passing.Videos
