EZIMPIKWENI, Sindiwe Magona's translation of Jared Kruger's acclaimed play, IN THE WINGS, will be presented by the award-winning Chaeli Campaign at the Zolani Centre in Nyanga. A play about about possibility, this production is another cutting edge piece of inclusive theatre brought to South African stages by the Nonprofit Organisations, with funding support from the National Lottery.
EZIMPIKWENI is the story of two sisters as they battle to work past their limitations to create the future the rest of the world sometimes fails to see. As it turns out, wheelchairs are tricky things: clumsy things - and funny things. So are lives. EZIMPIKWENI is a play about purpose, about living and negotiating the everyday stuff; it is about dreams and obstacles that get in the way of the realisation of those dreams. .
By translating this show into isiXhosa and staging it at the Zolani Centre, The Chaeli Campaign hopes to highlight disability within the urban Xhosa community in Cape Town and hopefully open up the discussion around inclusivity and accessibility within these communities by challenging perception around disability and possibility. To make the play accessible to the communities for which it is intended, The Chaeli Campaign has chosen to host EZIMPIKWENI at a venue in Nyanga rather than at a theatre in the city.EZIMPIKWENI will be directed by Bulelani Mabtyana, the the artistic director of Ukao Theatre Company. Mabtyana's production of his own play WORST OF BOTH WORLDS was a Best of Zabalaza Theatre Festival award-winner in 2012. Choreography for the production is by Mbovu Malinga, with the cast including Nontsikelelo Mabhoza, Thembekile Komani, Nomatrestu Xakuthugaga and Zinzi Nogavu.
EZIMPIKWENI will be performed from 28 September - 2 October at 10:00 and 13:00, with 18:00 performances taking place from 3 - 10 October. Tickets cost R20. The Zolani Centre is situated on Sithandatu Avenue (Terminus Road) in Nyanga.
